Worked example: the EAN-13 check digit
Take the 12 digits 040123456789, the number the generator opens with.
- Add the digits in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th places: 0 + 0 + 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 = 20.
- Add the digits in the even places and multiply by 3: (4 + 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9) × 3 = 87.
- Add the two: 20 + 87 = 107.
- The check digit is what takes that up to the next multiple of 10: 3.
The full barcode number is 0401234567893. Code 128 needs no extra digit from you: its checksum is built into the bars, and the text reads back exactly as you typed it.
Tips for barcodes that scan
- Keep the white margin on both sides of the bars. Scanners need it.
- Print black on white, at 100% scale. Don't stretch the image to fit.
- Test one label with your scanner before printing a whole sheet.

Frequently asked questions
Which barcode should I use, EAN-13 or Code 128?
Use EAN-13 for a 13-digit product number, like the ones printed on packaged goods. Use Code 128 for your own item codes and SKUs: it takes letters, numbers and symbols, and it scans exactly as you typed it.
What is the EAN-13 check digit?
The 13th digit. It is worked out from the first 12, so a scanner can tell when a digit was misread. Type 12 digits and the generator adds it. Type all 13 and it checks it.
Can I make up my own EAN-13 numbers?
For items only you sell, use the in-store range that GS1 sets aside: EAN-13 numbers starting with 04. That is also the range Kassly uses when it makes barcodes for you. Don't make up numbers starting with 480: those belong to GS1 Philippines members. If you use scale-label barcodes, avoid numbers starting with 2, because scale labels use that prefix.
