Customer Display

Show the customer their order, total and change while you ring them up — on a terminal's built-in second screen, or on a separate Android tablet on the same Wi-Fi.

The customer display is a screen that faces the customer. While you ring up a sale it shows each item and the running total, during payment it shows the cash received and the change, and afterwards it thanks them and goes back to a welcome screen.

It runs in two ways:

Show on What you need
This device's second screen A POS terminal with a built-in customer screen, such as the SUNMI D3 Pro
Another tablet Any Android tablet with the Kassly app, on the same Wi-Fi as the POS

Both are set up from Settings → Customer Display in the app, on the POS that drives the screen. Each POS has its own setting, so a store with two counters sets this up on each.

Neither needs the internet. The second screen is part of the terminal, and a tablet talks to its POS directly over your shop Wi-Fi.

On a terminal with a built-in second screen

  1. Open Settings → Customer Display on the terminal.
  2. Turn on Show customer display. When the terminal has a second screen, the line under it says Second screen detected with its size.
  3. Under Show on, pick This device's second screen.

If that option is greyed out with None detected on this device, Android is not reporting a second screen on this terminal. Settings → Customer Display Probe checks: it turns the second screen red if there is one ("Red shown on 2nd screen", with Hide red to clear it) or says "No secondary display".

On another tablet

Any Android tablet will do: the customer display does not sign in, is not linked to a terminal, and holds no account data. Everything it shows comes from the POS it is paired with.

Before you start:

  • Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi. A guest network that keeps devices apart from each other will not work.
  • Keep the tablet plugged in. Its screen stays on for as long as it shows the customer display.

Setting up the tablet

  1. Install Kassly on the tablet from the Play Store.
  2. On the sign-in screen, tap Use this device as a customer display, then Use as display. The link only appears on a device that is not linked to a terminal.
  3. The tablet shows a QR code, its Address (for example 192.168.1.50) and a six-digit Code.

Pairing the POS with it

  1. On the POS, open Settings → Customer Display and pick Another tablet under Show on.
  2. Under Pair a tablet, tap Scan its code and scan the QR on the tablet. On a POS without a camera, tap Type address instead, enter the tablet's address and code, and tap Pair.
  3. Turn on Show customer display.

The POS now says Connected, and the tablet switches to its welcome screen.

A wrong code is refused with "That code is wrong. Check the code on the display." After five wrong codes the tablet shows a new one.

What the customer sees

When The tablet shows
Between customers Your store name, the time, and your idle image if you set one
While you add items Each item with its options and quantity, and the total due
At checkout, paying cash Amount due, Cash received and Your change as you type
At checkout, paying by GCash or Maya Your payment QR code, if you set one (see below)
After payment Salamat! and a thank-you line for 12 seconds, then the welcome screen

Paying by card or on credit keeps the order on screen.

If the connection drops

The tablet keeps the last screen it had and shows a small note in the bottom corner. If the POS has not come back after 30 seconds, it goes back to the welcome screen, so the next customer never sees somebody else's order. Both devices reconnect on their own as soon as they can reach each other, and the tablet shows the current cart again.

Note on the tablet What it means
Waiting for the POS. Same Wi-Fi as the POS? This tablet is … The tablet is on the Wi-Fi but the POS is not connected. Check the POS is on and on the same network
This tablet's address changed to … (the POS knows …) The tablet joined a different network, or the router gave it a new address. Put it back on the POS's Wi-Fi, or pair the POS again
Not on Wi-Fi. Connect the tablet to the same Wi-Fi as the POS

On the POS, the same problem shows under the paired tablet in Settings → Customer Display as "Not reachable at … Check it's on and on the same Wi-Fi."

The POS finds the tablet by its address. If your router hands the tablet a new address after a restart, the POS can no longer reach it until you pair them again. To avoid this, reserve the tablet's address in your router's settings, as you would for a Wi-Fi receipt printer.

The display menu

Press and hold the top-left corner of the tablet for three seconds:

Option Does
Pair another POS Shows the QR code, address and code again
Forget all POS terminals Unpairs every POS. Each one has to pair again
Use as a POS instead Leaves customer display mode and goes to the sign-in screen

To stop using a tablet from the POS side, tap Unpair next to it in Settings → Customer Display.

What the screen shows

These settings are in Settings → Customer Display on the POS, and they apply to whichever screen it drives. Changes appear right away.

Setting What it does
Accent color The colour of the total panel and highlights. Four choices
Idle slideshow images A photo shown full-screen between customers. Use a wide (landscape) photo
QR code to display A payment QR shown when the customer pays by GCash or Maya. Upload an image, or generate one from a link or text, and add a caption such as Scan to pay

Only the first idle image is shown. You can add several, but the screen shows the first one and does not rotate through them. This keeps the screen still, which some built-in second screens need to avoid freezing.

What it does not do

  • It is not interactive. The customer cannot tap anything: no tips, signatures or loyalty sign-up on the customer screen.
  • One POS per display. A second POS that tries to use a tablet that is already in use is told "This display is in use by …". A POS drives one display at a time.
  • It does not work through the internet. A tablet must be on the same network as its POS. There is no way to show a POS's sales on a screen in another location.
  • It shows the sale, not your receipt. Receipts still print from the POS. See Receipts.
